Who’s controlling Whom?
Now that we have covered the possibilities offered by changing sounds with Bank and Program changes,
let’s take a look at how sounds can be changed within a song with the help of Controllers.
To simplify, Controller messages are changes of certain parameters that are sent via MIDI in real-time. This
Controller data is either incorporated into the song’s Setup Data, together with Bank and Program changes,
or is sent together with the note data as real-time changes.
The following table lists the most important controllers for CS2x song production. We also list controller val-
ues here that correspond the CS2x factory settings.
The most important CS2x Controllers
The CS2x deals with relative values for sound parameters such as Resonance, Release, Attack, Cutoff and
Panorama; these can be altered positively as well as negatively, relative to the sound’s factory programming.
This means that the controller in question should initially be set to its middle value (64) to ensure that the
CS2x knob setting actually corresponds with the Controller value. This does not apply to the Volume and
Effect Send controllers however. Here we work with absolute values, i.e. the machine parameter value and
the controller value are identical.
The supplied song setups already contain the most important controllers as events or faders, as well as Init
data in the form of System Exclusive messages that reset all of the current mode’s parameters back to their
default settings. This ensures that Multi settings from a previous songs are not in effect anymore. It also
means that you only need to change parameters that deviate from their default settings.
